LITTLE BOHEMIAN FITZROVIA

I live in the Fitzrovia neighborhood in central London. Fitzrovia is near the West End but also partly in Camden and the city of Westminster between Marylebone and Bloomsbury.  Just taking a walk around you will notice that the neighborhood consist of residential, business, retail, education, and healthcare. Fitzrovia is considered a bohemian area because of writers such as Virginia Woolf once called it home. Portland Hospital for Women and Children is located on Great Portland Street near the tube station. The BBC is just a few buildings away down Great Portland Street.  MTV Networks Europe, Nickelodeon, and CNN are just a few other networks with headquarters located throughout the neighborhood. Many celebrities call this area home.  The people of Fitzrovia range in age from young adult –middle aged and they all have didn’t taste in dress. On any given day you can see men in business suits, kids in school uniform, teens in the latest fashion, and fashion forward business woman.  The pictures below range from residential to business, and parks. I believee they are the perfect example of what the neighborhood represents

OH BATH HOW GORGEOUS YOU ARE....

Having to be up early on a Friday for a 8:30am departure on any day would have been a little bothersome but knowing I was heading to Stonehenge and Bath I was willing to bare the early start to a day. Our coach departed from Dilke house at actually 8:30 heading for Stonehenge first. Stonehenge was only a two hour drive from London. I was excited for our drive as most of my classmates went straight asleep on the bus; I was wide awake making sure I didn't miss any of the gorgeous countryside. The English countryside is just as gorgeous as you would imagine, there are fields filled with yellow flowers, hillside leading into pretty villages from a distance.

Excuse the clouds they like to hang around in England

After a two hour bus drive we arrived in Stonehenge and discovering that it is always windy. With such a place that has boggled historians for years and including extreme wind and black birds, I automatically called it something supernatural.  Studying Stonehenge in class for years and finally seeing it in person is something that takes a little getting adjusted to. Once over the first glance of these huge rocks, you start to question actually what they were used for. I assume they were used to either determine the season, and weather or even the time. After freezing for a while from the wind we headed back to the bus for our hour ride to Bath.

Arriving in Bath is like arriving into a fairy tale land, from the first glance of the city on the hill. Our first stop in Bath was the Roman Baths, which was such a beautiful place with some questionable water (only the main bath). Once you enter the building you are told not to touch the water but of course some people take it upon themselves, luckily I did not. I was even afraid to stand to close because of my lack of swimming skills and not knowing how deep the water is combined with my clumsiness. The architecture and structure of the baths is still in good condition today. I am amazed at how far ahead the people of the past were during times you would think they lacked the knowledge to create such places. They created buildings that have been standing for thousands of years yet some our buildings began giving away within a few years. After our tour of the baths and some really good pictures we were all ready for lunch so we headed out to see what Bath offered food wise. Not soon after we stumbled up Bath smallest pub……it really is tiny, this is where I had my first fish & chips which were delicious. We then headed out explore bath which I quickly decided I would love to live one day…I would get over the tourist eventually.

We left Bath at 4:30 hoping to beat traffic but the universe wasn't on our side and our three hour ride back turned into 4.5 hour bus ride because of an accident. Finally arriving back at Dilke house and University of London I quickly headed for the restroom because I had needed to go since we left Bath and discovered there was one on the bus the entire time….the universe likes to play chess with me sometimes which I always lose. I headed straight back to my flat and showered and went straight to bed, I was exhausted.

Hopefully I get to spend some time living in Bath in the future.

NO ONE MOURNS THE WICKED.........

On Wednesday night June 12th I went to my first ever musical. Our first play was Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre located in the Victoria area of London. Wicked tells the back-story of the witches from the Wizard of Oz. Most likely being the only person in the world who have not seen the Wizard of Oz, I did not know what to expect from Wicked. This was an amazing play with amazing singers especially the actress playing Elphaba (Wicked witch of the West). The actress playing Galinda (Good Witch)  did just an equally good job with her role. One thing that really amazed me was the actually stage. The stage was such a beautiful masterpiece itself now as I try explaining the beauty of it I wish I had taken pictures. I have to congratulate the entire cast and crew even production managers because this was an extraordinary (maybe to strong of a word but you get my point) play and I would happily go see it again…I just might.  If you’re ever in London take a trip to Victoria and see Wicked I promise you won’t regret it.

VELAZQUEZ, VAN EYCK, MONET, RUBENS, AND DA VINCI..OH MY!

Discovering the vast world of Art history in the spring of last year, I was a bit excited to visit the National Gallery.  The National Gallery holds pieces from Diego Velazquez, Van Eyck, Bronzino, Monet, Peter Paul Rubens, and Leonardo da Vinci.  I was most excited about seeing paintings from Velazquez, being his painting Las Meninas is one of my favorite. His depiction of King Philip IV of Spain daughter Margaret in her natural environment is done beautifully; he even painted himself into the portrait which says a lot about his position within the Spanish Royal family.

Another artist I love is Claude Monet who was a big impressionist artist, for those who do not know Impressionist time in history was one of the biggest and best times in art.  Monet is included in the story of how Vincent van Gogh ear went missing seeing as they were good friends. My favorite painting by Monet is his Water Lily Pond. This painting shows a sense motion with a sense of peace. Taking one look at this paint you feel a wave of calm overcome you as if you are on the other side of the pond taking in the beauty of it all.  The national Gallery will be getting another visit from me where I can spend as much time as I like taking in the beauty and history of such marvelous artwork.

YOU'RE MOVING BY YOURSELF TO THE FITZROVIA NEIGHBORHOOD IN LONDON

Decided to do a quick post on where I will be staying while I am in London. As I said in a previous post I am staying at Hampden House on Weymouth Street in the Bloomsbury neighborhood. There are six of us sharing a 3 bedroom 2.5 baths flat. We have one of the biggest flats in our group. We were really excited when we seen we had a washer in our flat.  Also there are no outlets in the bathrooms here so straightening and curling my hair was kind of a hard task, but I've found my way around that. We live super close to BBC (maybe I’ll get to see a few of my favorite British celebrities) so whenever we see the tower we know were close to home and can find our way around.

I am sharing a room with two other girls by the names of Colleen and Coral. There are two other girls who are sisters named Olivia and Mackenzie, and my 6th roommate is Annish the only male on our entire trip. We are all a pretty calm and chill group so that makes things pretty easy and we get along really good.  Of course naturally I have spent most of my time with my roommates who I absolutely love, and we all have a little bit weird in us. Colleen is a fashion major like me and Coral is a media and film major with a minor in women’s studies. Both of them only have fall semester left then they will be college graduates.

Keep checking back in for the adventures I get up to with my roommates and what I discover about them and their personalities.

QUICK STOP TO OXFORD STREET

Once we left Camden Town we headed to Oxford Street on a adventure to find Primark so I could find a jacket because I was tired of turning into a Popsicle. Oxford Street is the place for the ultimate shopping lover. There is at least four H&M on Oxford Street alone. After a little walk longer than expected and stop in Boots we stumbled upon Primark. Once learning of Primark and its inexpensive product I thought the store would be a medium sized store. How amazed I was to see Oxford Street Primark was the size of a department store.  Entering the store it was hard to focus on the object I came for and not want to buy everything in sight. Luckily after heading to the 3rd floor I found the perfect jacket. Primark has 4 floors.

After our trip to Oxford Street we headed home for the day, and I happily thought about how amazing Primark was and I would be back even if I am only browsing the product.

OHH CAMDEN TOWN HOW I LOVE YOU!

On Sunday June 9th my roommates and I headed out to Camden Markets. I was really excited because of the rave reviews I had read from many of the London fashion bloggers I follow. I originally thought the market was just one huge place, but I found out it is a bunch of different markets in Camden Town.  Camden Markets consist of Camden Stables Market, Camden Lock Market, Camden Lock Village, Camden Market, Main Streets, and Inverness Street.

Sunday seemed to be quite windy and chilly but I braved it to explore the many markets. Once exiting the tube you are on the main street which offers stores such as Vans and American Apparel. If you walk a little further down you come across Camden Market which offers all types of clothing and accessories. This market even has knocked-off product of brands such as Obey, Boy London, and Beats by Dre.  Further down you enter the Camden Lock Market which houses so many different stands selling so much different stuff; also this is where the food section is. Upon discovering the food I was in heaven, there were food stands offering food from every corner of the world including Texas BBQ. I have a cousin who would love the food markets.  Camden Lock Market is also where the stables market is which housed a small cute little cafĂ© with a book section attached. The Stables Market is actually really old stables that were converted into many different markets.

Leaving Camden Town I found a place that was part of my personality and one of my favorites place in London so far. I loved it so much I returned back the next day with my roommate Coral and our teaching assistant Quita. This trip I tried one of the many Chinese food markets they had and it was amazing. Don’t worry I have a special post for all of the food I have had in London since being here. I plan to travel back to the markets a few more times before my departure back to the states.

I SEE DEAD PEOPLE...NO REALLY I SEE DEAD PEOPLE EVERY WHERE AT THE ABBEY

On Saturday June 8th we did a quick bus tour of London followed by a tour of Westminster Abbey. I learned that London is actually two cities, the city of Westminster and the city of London. Westminster Abbey is gorgeous on the outside and inside. We weren't allowed to take pictures inside but I took plenty of them outside of the building.

Westminster Abbey is a really old church with lots of dead historical figures in every corner of the building. From the moment you walk into the building you've already walked on a couple of bodies. I was bit uncomfortable in the beginning but got over it fairly quickly upon looking at the beauty of it all. While at Westminster Abbey I got to see the tomb of Elisabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots, and Bloody Mary. Charles Darwin is also buried in Westminster Abbey (ironic I know). Once a queen or king dies it is the responsibility of their successor to create their tomb/crypt(whatever you want to call it) so some of them were elaborate and some where just plain.  It’s also not easy getting the permission to be buried in Westminster Abbey. Winston Churchill refused to be buried at the Abbey because to many of the people he did not like in his lifetime were buried there.

We also saw the coronation chair which will not be pulled out of it’s sealed off section until the next coronation…..Prince Charles possibly or even Prince William. Years ago the chair was not as protected or well taken care of as it is today; the chair is full of graffiti and there are parts missing. The stories that go along with the graffiti are actually quite hilarious.

Our trip to Westminster Abbey was a really good one and I only wish I had pictures of the inside. On our bus ride to the Abbey we passed by Big Ben, Parliament, and the Tower of London which house the crown jewels. Did you know Big Ben is not the name of the tower but of the bell inside? The tower is named Elisabeth tower.

Also if you didn't know Westminster Abbey is where Prince William and Duchess Kate were married. Maybe I will luck up and marry Prince Harry there also.
